well the film didnt ship from LA until friday which put me off a bit, but what am i going to do? i have two rolls of true bw i need to get run but i dont even know where i can in town this week. [its one of these rolls that contains a football flying at my face]
tonight ill shoot various super bowl related things...possibly even with a flash. gasp.
for now, here is jason wallis. is it me or does his hand look huge?
the photo i took today may end up being really boring but i was compelled to take it nonetheless. a while back i had an incidental conversation with the guy who owns the property on which The Garage operates and it seems he used to be a an architect or some such and was responsible for building what ended up being the first gay and lesbian church (his words...i dont know exactly what that means). anyone familiar enough with this city would probably know it at site. its the crazy looking, blue, a-frame church on montclair as you approach the backside of crestline. anyway...they are tearing it down though i couldnt say i know why. most of its gone and the 40 foot section of blue ribcage that is left is strangely upsetting. it seems so dramatic to be sticking so far up in the air in the middle of plowed-down dirt and cleared trees like a beached whale picked clean or a burnt down shanty town. i dont really know anything about the place other than hearing this one guys story but it was enough to at least make me notice the building's destruction. either way its what i shot today.
on to today's post. today will be a rare occasion where there are two photos. the first is today's actual shot and the second is for bryan so he can write his Super Bowl blog entry using either / both of the shots
sküp (bryan's brother, phil) and beeje recently got amazing, small "replicas" of nfl helmets. heres an old school style shot of them posing with the ball (for no apparent reason), as well as sküp in the car, looking a bit too intense and long-faced. also note that the beverage in his hand is a La Croix.
photograph(s) taken today: taylor bruce
today's posted photo: a photo from the hospital during my sister's recovery time in the hospital. it kind of reminds me of old found photos from way back in the day that are just...photos. does that make sense? some of the photos i love from decades past are the ones that were never intended to be outstanding. i took this shot to document the fact that it was snowing. not having looked at it in a month or so i strikes me now as one i found at a thrift store. perhaps thats not the most flattering thing i could say about one of my own shots but it seems like it came with its own little piece of nostalgia so im okay with it. im finding a bit more peace as late in reacting to photos and going with the feeling i find rather than trying to analyze why i react that way i do. to wit, me posting this shot.
also i should mention that i relate this photo to a song called "ashes over manhattan" (or is it "spread my ashes over manhattan." hmm. i dont know.) by the great book of john, which was apprpriately written the same week by taylor shaw.
today i went back over to bryan's and played more Cross Street Baker's Dozen, which is a game we made up. Jeremiah stopped by and played with us and i shot a roll throughout the afternoon.
so in that spirit i thought i'd post a photo from the day we invented the game. thats sküp and bryan on the right and mister toad on the sidewalk.
today was a good day for shooting indeed. lots of stuff from jason shooting a band and alan rocking an awesome beard. blah blah blah
here's caleb. waiting on film to get back. need to send some off.
shot bryan throwing a ball at my head today
also shot taylor hanging out at the studio
shot alan and the city again today. here is another shot of alex.
Today i shot various things around my neighborhood including me spinning in the street.
the real news of today is that last friday i shot alex mitchell and got back the first roll today. the roll i got back is one i shot in a specific way to make the other shots i have done of the great book of john as he was the only member of the band i hadnt shot in that way. here is a random frame from that roll. lots more coming in a week or two from shooting alex as well as bekah and friends from the snow day i mentioned.
heres one of alex for now
three weeks in and feeling pretty good. my friend jason hamric started a blog too that could prove to be really cool. here's hoping we can inspire each other to do things consistently.
today i shot caleb and in the process he created a wiggly, shanty-style pillow fort (and had to lift up the middle to get inside it), which seems about right for caleb. the pillow fort part, not the wiggly shanty part.
anyway...I like this guy. his name is caleb.

Electric Lion
I have started a new blog that is apart from this website that has a simple goal of making me shoot and post every day this year. I tend to go through droughts at times when I am either really busy or really idle during which I pretty much don't shoot and that seems a) easily fixable and b) kind of inexcusable. My remedy for this is to create this blog that basically gives me similar restrictions as Paleo had on his Song Diary.
It will be updated daily (see the rules) and I'll try to update the images over here every week or so. Also I'll note that as of this posting the design is still VERY under construction and will get better.
Here is the first entry from the electric lion blog.
so today i join the uncountable myriad of camera owners who have set forth to post / shoot a photo every day. to try to create a work worthwhile every single day. to follow in the footsteps of giants. to try to do with photographs what emily dickinson did with poems, what suzan-lori parks did with plays, what paleo did for songs. i'm not trying to go out every day and create the world's greatest photo and i'm certainly not trying to post an image for the sake of doing so. if i can achieve a small part of what david strackany managed over his year long project then i will be beyond elated. i will try to learn from his example, actually. i was lucky enough to witness his journey first hand and get direct insight from him as to how he saw his work and, in a small way, what it meant to him. in short, i will attempt to create something every day and let it stand by itself and not go back an re-edit or have doubts about it later. at the end of the year i hope to have something that ..well..i guess just is SOMETHING. something that has been consistent and hopefully improved over time.
to give myself structure, i will be giving myself a loose set of rules in which to operate.
1_ i must take a photo on any given day
2_ the photo i post for a given day does not necessarily have to be the one taken that day
3_ if the photo for the day is shot film, i can post a place-holder text entry that gives insight into what should be expected to appear once the film is returned and post-processed.
4_ the goal is to keep making photographs in a classic manner, but new ideas should not be written off. that is, i can experiment, so long as it isn't some horrid gimmick.
5_ if for some reason i have no access to the internet, i am not excused for a post for that day.
6_ if a day is missed (ie not photo is taken on that day (rule one, most important)) the project is over.
7_ self portraits are kind of a cop-out, but will pass. creative, abstract, or meta-portrait attempts are encouraged, but i guess not 100% required.
8_ enjoy the process, push yourself, don't be an asshole.
so there we go.
day one was me on my scooter driving to Bryan's house. here is bryan and ashley's kid Noah, whom i call Karl (after Karl Pilkington, as they look the same. long story.)
Here is Day 001 (Noah) and several favorites of my first 19 days.
oh dear lord what a day, and its only lunch time
it SNOWED last night and it actually hung around a bit and a bunch of us went out to play in it and fotergraph things.
things i shot on purpose: bekah portraits, stephanie portraits, candid dillys of all the peoples, a couple of shots of this crazy couple who were headed to the salvation army to eat but had on huge red jumpsuit-type things and wanted to take photos with us. i think he said they were from the 9th ward, a tiny piece of pigeon foot i saw on the ground, and some random dudes videotaping their exploits at lynn park and throwing snowballs. oh and speaking of snowballs i had steph throw them at me while i tried to photo it.
here is jimmy from a show a while back
