I’m not sure how this image should be categorized in the hierarchy of POPTPOPs, but it’s a picture of my camera taking video of Paul, one of the main people we connected with in Uganda. I guess it’s technically a poCtVop, which I’m not sure even counts. BUT WHATEVER HERE IT IS.

I gave video a go this trip to Africa and for once I’m excited about it—for two reasons. The big one is that I’ll be passing off the video and audio files (as well as the photos) to another team who will create something out of them. It has always been the crafting of the story that has intimidated me about video because I just don’t think like that by default. But knowing what I shot and seeing how they piece it all together I think will be a stepping stone for me to start to make my brain start to accept the fact that people want video (blah blah blah! business!). Secondably, I’m excited about the video stuff because the light pretty much everywhere we’ve been has been insanely pretty. The above photo is an example of everything just being pretty naturally. It’s Paul under a jackfruit tree back in their farm land. Simple as that.

I got an email from my friend Brian T Murphy yesterday with a surprise POPTPOP bomb. What better way to spend time at a wedding than to shoot a poptpop that is itself an ENDLESS WORMHOLE OF PICTURES OF PICTURES OF PICTURES OF PICTURES.

It’s Thanksgiving here in America and that means family gatherings of all kinds. This photo sort of sums up mine this year. This is my aunt Joan has had an iPad for about a month and loves to take accidental videos photos with it. For example…

As I’ve made perfectly clear by now, last weekend was jam packed with bee-related stuff.

Saturday we had an all-day bee class, Sunday we extracted our first ever batch of honey, and Monday I went up to Huntsville to help a family friend winterize his colonies and extract the fall flow honey. Quite a flurry of bee activity all at once.

Here are some highlights from the day of the bee class.

One section was learning about how to make creamed honey, another was about a technique for increasing honey output and swarm prevention called checker-boarding (taught by the guy who developed it!), another was intermediate hive inspection, and I ended the day with learning about queen rearing.

Working on a personal project on Sunday, Steph was kind enough to grab a couple of shots of me photographing Jill on the ole 4×5.

Later in the day we crammed that sucker all up near the hive, threw some light in the woods, and took some photos of Jill cracking that damn hive open. Processed the sheets today and can’t wait to get them scanned. I actually would love to do contact prints of them, but to what end, eh?
